Project researcher: Prof. Alexander Vainstein

The center’s primary goal is the development of advanced genome editing protocols for ornamentals and creating the infrastructure consisting of a greenhouse, tissue culture room, and the necessary equipment. We plan to develop efficient regeneration and CAS/guide delivery systems to produce genome-edited ornamentals that do not contain transgenes.

Specifically, we plan to:

  • Use cell-fate-affecting genes for the generation of genome-edited recalcitrant plants.
  • Test the applicability of different Cas or Cpf variants to genome editing.
  • Generate Cas-expressing plants that are ready for editing using virally delivered guides.
  • Use viral systems to deliver nucleases and/or for the delivery of guides.
